This was in my top 5 most anticipated movies of 2017. I could not wait to see it. I discovered the original Blade Runner in my teens and loved it with that special love that hipsters have for their underappreciated favorites. There was a lot riding on this sequel. The trailers looked mouthwatering and I was all in for the crazy hype. It isn’t easy to write a sequel, particularly for an older film whose fans loved it as much as I did. Would Denis Villeneuve deliver like he did on Sicario and Arrival? Or would this be another over-hyped cash grab? Read more
When I walked into the theater to see Blade Runner 2049 on Monday, I had no idea what to expect. What was the movie actually about? Why is there a sequel to a movie that bombed at the box office and was later deemed a misinterpreted cult classic? As somebody who finds the original 1982 Blade Runner to be highly overrated, I write this review surprised by two things: first, that a sequel to a movie, viewed by many as a misinterpreted, neo-noir sci-fi classic, would be made 35 years later; secondly, (and more surprisingly) that this sequel, Blade Runner 2049, is not only leaps and bounds better than the original, but is also one of the best movies I’ve seen in recent years. Thanks to the movie’s mysterious story, memorable characters, gorgeous visuals, and unparalleled direction from Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049 is an instant sci-fi classic and one which will be talked about for years to come. It can be hard to avoid spoilers before a show, especially one that’s been as widely anticipated as this one, but I try. I like to give the most honest review I can, after all, so I try not to be influenced beforehand. Still, I couldn’t entirely avoid it, there was some disappointment about Suicide Squad. On my way in, on the next ticket line over, I actually heard the box counter girl advise a young man to ‘just take it for what is was, don’t have any expectations’. It was good advice. I did exactly that and I was just fine. Read more
Suicide Squad is being released at a critical time. For Hollywood, summer has scorched movie studios with an inconceivable amount of dull, worthless movies that fall into the category of “financial flops.” And for Warner Brothers, because of below expectation numbers back in March for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the microscope on Suicide Squad has intensified immensely. After months of buildup thanks to a strong marketing campaign, David Ayer’s (End of Watch) movie centering around the “Worst Heroes Ever” is finally here. Suicide Squad has problems that keep it from being a memorable. But nonetheless, it’s a somewhat delightful oddball comic book movie, thanks to a cast full of great characters. Read more

This happens to me every time I try to sit down and watch one of those primetime procedural dramas on the major networks. The cop walks into some gross crackhouse and the killer is blasting heavy metal. Every time – the serial killer, mass murderer or rapist or lunatic whatever is always a heavy metal listener on these shows. It just happened this week on Chicago Fire and it drove me bonkers.
