2018 was a good year for movies. Not great like 2016 and 2017, but there were definitely some great films to hit theaters and streaming services last year including Hereditary and BlacKkKlansman. I saw over 100 films in 2018 and I managed to narrow them down to a top 10. Let’s take a look below.

Honorable Mentions:

  • First Man
  • Eighth Grade
  • Thoroughbreds
  • Isle of Dogs
  • You Were Never Really Here
  • Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
  • If Beale Street Could Talk

10. BlacKkKlansman

This movie was very timely, well acted, and well-directed. The pacing makes the re watch very easy, not to mention its pretty comical at times. A true story that the world needed to see, now more than ever.

Number of Oscar Nominations: 6

Snubs: Lead Actor

9. Avengers: Infinity War

Quite possibly the most ambitious comic book movie of all time, Avengers: Infinity War is packed with action, comedy, and heartbreak. The boldness of the ending has everyone on the planet counting down the days till Avengers: End Game hits theaters in April.

Number of Oscar Nominations: 1

Snubs: Sound Editing, Costume Design, Production Design

8. Annihilation

Annihilation is one of those movies that we’ll look back on in 5 years and ask ourselves, how did that not get much attention? The intriguing adapted screenplay is fantastic and the movie is beautiful to look at.

Number of Oscar Nominations: 0

Snubs: Visual Effects, Adapted Screenplay, Sound Mixing

7. A Quiet Place

Who knew that guy from The Office could direct this well? A Quiet Place was one of 2018’s best surprises. It is tense from beginning to end, but it also does a good job spending the appropriate time on the characters.

Number of Oscar Nominations: 1

Snubs: Supporting Actress, Sound Mixing, Original Screenplay

6. Vice

Vice is a fun, fast paced movie that is extremely well acted thanks to the poised direction from Adam McKay. The screenplay mixes comedy and seriousness together very well. I know Christian Bale already has an Oscar, but The Academy might have to give him another one for this performance. It is truly remarkable.

Number of Oscar Nominations: 8

Snubs: None

5. The Favourite

Yorgos Lanthimos has had an interesting career so far as a filmmaker, but his efforts on The Favourite are his best to date. It oozes originality as it captivates the audience. It also has some of the best acting of 2018.

Number of Oscar Nominations: 10

Snubs: None

4. A Star is Born

I’M NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING. Bradley Cooper knocks this remake out of the park. Did anyone actually know that Lady Gaga had range like that as an actress? She definitely deserves the Oscar for her performance.

Number of Oscar Nominations: 8

Snubs: Best Directing, Sound Editing

3. Hereditary

Hereditary is one of the scariest movies of all time. As it ages, it might actually become the scariest movie ever. The incredible screenplay and acting will both leave you speechless and there are virtually no jump scares in this one, only pure emotional terror.

Number of Oscar Nominations: 0

Snubs: Lead Actress, Original Screenplay, Cinematography

2. Mission Impossible: Fallout

Fallout is absolutely incredible. Tom Cruise has never been better as Ethan Hunt, and what makes this one so good is how the screenplay forces Ethan to go against what he believes in. The action is unbelievable at times and the stakes have never been higher. Fallout was 2018’s Mad Max: Fury Road, except for some reason The Academy chose to completely ignore it.

Subs: Lead Actor, Best Picture, Best Directing, Original Screenplay, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing

1. Roma

After it ages a little, Roma will go down as one of the best movies in the history of cinema. It is a very personal, heartfelt story that comes across genuine and authentic. Director Alfonso Cuaron’s vision is very poised and patient. This is not one to be missed. And no one should miss it because it’s on Netflix. CHECK IT OUT NOW.
