Wednesday is here, and new comics are within reach. If you are like me, you may still have a stack of comics that haven’t been read from last week (or last month), but here is a list of new series starting this week, which I will be picking up at my local comic shop.
Like many readers I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. I have chosen to highlight five promising new titles to consider picking up this week, plus a few extras for those that will skip paying for school textbooks.
Dark Horse Comics – Margaret Atwood, Johnnie Christmas, Tamra Bonvillain
I don’t often feature collections of comics in the weekly list, but this new title is an exception. It is a title like Angel Catbird that really highlights why comics are an amazing medium for story telling. Comic readers rarely are treated to a well known writer, like Margret Atwood, crossing over from a more traditional medium of novels and short stories into more graphic stories. It is this collaboration with talented artists Johnnie Christmas and Tamra Bonvillain that make this book a must buy this week. What more is there to love than a tale of a man accidentally mutating himself with the DNA of a cat and an owl.
Aftershock Comics – Paul Jenkins, Leila Leiz, Tamara Bonvillain, Brian Stelfreeze
From a diverse team of creators composed of differing genders, gender identities, ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations comes a groundbreaking new series featuring the world’s first transgender superhero!
As the world struggles to accept the emergence of a new kind of mutant species known as alterations, or “Alters,” a young woman begins her transition from male to female only to find herself also transitioning into a powerful Alter. Faced with persecution by the multi-powered fascist known only as Matter Man, she will face the world as Chalice–a hero for a new age. But as Chalice navigates the path to becoming her true self, she must juggle the complications of her civilian life and the responsibilities of her newfound power.
This groundbreaking series–years in the making–begins the saga of a young woman who can only really be herself…whenever she is not herself.
Image Comics – Jim Zub, Djibril Morissette-Phan, K. Michael Russell
Farrah Durante is a middle-aged actress hunting for her next gig in an industry where youth trumps experience. Her frustrations become an emotional lure for something horrifying out beyond the water… something ready to exact revenge on the shallow celebrity-obsessed culture that’s led her astray.
Fan-favorite JIM ZUB (WAYWARD, Thunderbolts) and newcomer DJIBRIL MORISSETTE-PHAN tear into the heart of Hollywood in GLITTERBOMB, a dramatic horror story about fame and failure.
Image Comics – Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Elizabeth Breitweiser
Every killer has to have his first kill, and they’re never easy.
Strange Attractors #4 – $3.99
Boom! Studios – Charles Soule, Soo Lee, Greg Scott, Scott Newman
Heller solicits the help of his fellow New Yorkers in helping to protect the city as he finds himself starting to believe in Dr. Brownfield’s bizarre theories.
Extra Pulls: Batman #6, Bounty #3, Jughead #9, Kim & Kim #2, Paper Girls #9
