It is Wednesday again, I am looking at the stack of comics I have not had the chance to read from the week(s) previous, and here I am making a list of titles I will be picking up at my local comic shop.
Like many I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. So here are 5 titles worth looking into this week, and a couple honorary mentions for those that have some extra cash from that rare stamp Great-Aunt Edith sent you.
Battleworld can be very confusing. This book, though contemporaneous (in relation to the other Secret Wars books), is set as though it is King James’ England, and as such has Marvel characters imagined as they would be in 1602. In this issue, Angela has found her old team, or rather the team she was part of in the Marvel-616 universe, which isn’t necessarily the past, but a different reality (which no longer exists). Regardless, this version of Angela, who is a witch hunter, meets up with the 1602 version of the Guardians of the Galaxy and they continue their quest tracking the Faustians and Enchantress. I cannot wait to see what trees and raccoons conceived as though it is 1602.
As Marvel’s All-New All-Different re-launch approaches, another current book is one step closer to concluding. Mark Waid and Chris Samnee have waited until now to bring Daredevils worthiest foe, Kingpin, back into the fold. Will he be able to use Wilson Fisk to get what he wants, and will it result in the end of Matt Murdock.
Ninjak #5 – $3.99
Valiant Entertainment has been carving a name for themselves over the past few years with recent blockbuster events The Valiant and Divinity. Bringing in talented writers and artists like Matt Kindt, Clay Mann and Butch Guice to take on franchise characters like Ninjak. As the first story arc comes to a close, Ninjak looks to conclude his infiltration mission by taking out the Weaponeer. Last issue we found out that Ninjak and Roku may have met before, will this come in the way of completing the assignment?
Finally, after months of hiatus, Sex Criminals returns to start its third story arc. This issue was intended for release last month, but was sent back to printers after a marathon 13 hour session of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky defacing 1000 blank covers, which are now unsellable. Though you might have a hard time getting your dirty little hands of one of those issues, there is a possibility of getting them on one of the XXX, Bryan Lee O’Mally variant cover. It’s great to have the Sex Crimz team back at it.
I think that Thors is the best companion comic to the main Secret Wars book. Because the book is taking place in multiple territories of Battleworld, the reader is allowed to visualize the very different circumstance each is in. The mystery of who, other than the Thors, has the ability to jump between worlds to preform the murders is very intense and engrossing. Additionally, we get to see the myriad of characters wearing the Thor uniform. As if 1602 Groot wasn’t enough this week, Groot Thor!
Extra pulls: Lazarus #18, Material #3, Southern Bastards #10, Star Wars #7, Wayward #10
