TOP 5 COMICS TO BUY – 07/15/15: BOOK OF DEATH, HAWKEYE & SIEGE

Share

It is Wednesday again, I am looking at the stack of comics I have not had the chance to read from the week(s) previous, and here I am making a list of titles I will be picking up at my local comic shop.

Like many I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. So here are 5 titles worth looking into this week, and a couple honorary mentions for those that have some extra cash from the money they saved only eating ramen for the last week

bookofdeath1Book of Death #1 – $3.99

This is the beginning of Valiant’s summer comic event, also celebrating the 25th anniversary. Written by Robert Venditti (X-O Manowar, Green Lantern), with artists Robert Gill and Doug Braithwaite, Booth of Death follows the last Geomancer, and her thousand year old sworn protector Eternal Warrior, as they try to defend themselves against every hero and villain in the Valiant universe, while stopping the Dark Age from occurring. Valiant’s last event, The Valiant, was a huge success, and I have high hopes that this series will be even better.

blackcanary2Black Canary #2 – $2.99

Black Canary rocks on, and as we found out in the first issue of this new direction for the character, it’s not only the fans that are looking to get their hands on her… It is not just Black Canary that is in danger, the rest of the band has to be on their toes if another battle comes their way. Practising music and training to be a skilled fighter sounds like a lot of work; we will see how the rest of the band fairs when they trade in their instruments for weapons.

hawkeye22Hawkeye #22 – $4.99

It is the end of an era, as the Matt Fraction and David Aja’s magnificent run on Hawkeye comes to a close this week. If for any reason you have not picked up any of the previous issues of this series, now is as good as any time to read the complete story of this one-of-a-kind hero, and his everyday life shenanigans.

Secret Six #4 – $2.99

It was not until I had picked up issues 2 & 3 of this book that I was really sold on the concept, but Gail Simone really does grab and hold the readers attention. A combination of action and dry humour, characters like Catman are currently lying low while gathering more information about this peculiar team’s newest enemy. We will see how long this team of assassins can stay out of trouble after retreating to conventional living in the suburbs.

seige1Siege #1 – $3.99

I began regularly reading comics immediately after the original Siege event had concluded in 2010, however it appears this Secret Wars tie-in of the same name has very little similarities to its counterpart. Instead, this Siege follows a crew of characters which have been sentenced as a result of breaking the laws of Battleworld. This is Kieron Gillen’s final Marvel title before taking time off to focus on his creator-owned titles. Paired with Filipe Andrade on art, this duo tells the story of a team lead by Abigail Brand, and comprising of Miss America (see A-Force #1 for more on how she got here), Kang the Conqueror, Leonardo Da Vinci and their duty to protecting humanity from the dangerous zombie hordes and annihilation waves from the Deadlands.

Extra pulls: Dead Drop #3, Hail Hydra #1, Inhumans: Attilan Rising #3, Lumberjanes #16, Silver Surfer #13

I read comics. I write about comics. You read about me writing about comics. If you have comics you want me to read, write me, and I will read it. I might even write about it.
