Top 5 Comics to Buy – 06/03/15: Midnighter, Squirrel Girl & The Wicked + The Divine

Share

It is Wednesday again, I am looking at the stack of comics I have not had the chance to read from the week(s) previous, and here I am making a list of titles I will be picking up at my local comic shop.

Like many I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. So here are 5 titles worth looking into this week, and a couple honorary mentions for those that have some extra cash that they found stashed in the couch.

Dead Drop #2 – $3.99DEAD-DROP_002

Valiant Entertainment has done a great job with their rebooted  which started in 2012. This mini-series brings together talented writer Ales Kot (Secret Avengers) and artist Adam Gorham (Zero), for a stellar conspiracy story. While issue #1 focused on X-O Manowar, this next chapter follows Archer as he looks to stop the biotechnological virus from being released. Hope to find out who is the mastermind behind this threatening attack.

Midnighter #1 – $2.99midnighter1

I don’t purchase many DC comics titles, but that may change following the conclusion of Convergence, and the end of New-52. Midnighter was originally created by Warren Ellis and appeared in Stormwatch and The Authority, but has appeared various times and in multiple versions of DC universes. This new portrayal of Midnighter looks to follow closer to the Ellis’ early character, being brutally violent and openly gay. So grab this book if you need to get your fix of brutality this week, as Midnighter tracks down the disappearance of dangerous biotech weapons.

Secret Wars #3 – $3.99secretwars3

Part 3 of the 8 part event hits shelves this week, and it looks like we will be getting more information about growing rebellion opposed to Victor Von Doom’s leadership. As we explore more of the regions of Battleworld, pieces of the previous Marvel universes begin to reveal themselves. What heroes will we find in the mysteries of Battleworld, and who will they side with?

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #6 – $3.99USG6

There are too many great things to say about how this book has been so far. If you haven’t had a chance to pick any of the previous issues, read this issue and then the previous 5. There are not many books which can be enjoyed by any age, but this is one of them. The stories are often simple, so when Squirrel Girl is on the hunt for a new friend, what kind of trouble will she find on the way? I sure it will be fun and hilarious as always.

The Wicked + The Divine #11 – $3.50WickedDivine_11

Following the exciting news of The Wicked + The Divine being adapted for television, issue 11 is the conclusion of the second story arc. Maybe not the best jumping on point for readers not familiar with this Image Comics title, but worth noting when for later this month when issues #6-11 are compiled and released in vol. 2. With Fandemonium and Ragnarock over we are sure to be in for a treat with what Keiron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie have in store for us.
