Solo: A Star Wars Story is One of The Strongest in a Franchise That Keeps Getting Better (Review)

Solo: A Star Wars Story is One of The Strongest in a Franchise That Keeps Getting Better (Review)

2018 keeps delivering.  This week it was Solo: A Star Wars Story.  I had my doubts about whether Disney could deliver its promised one Star Wars movie per year.  I thought maybe the quality might start to slip or something but it feels like the opposite is true.  The Star Wars movies keep getting better; the actions scenes keep getting more dramatic, the cantinas keep getting more alien-y and the droids keep getting sassier.   It amazes me how well they can establish the mythology of the franchise while still making it a fresh new story. Needless to say, I loved Solo: ASWS. Read more

Ron Howard Defies the Odds with Solo: A Star Wars Story (Review)

Ron Howard Defies the Odds with Solo: A Star Wars Story (Review)

The famed smuggler, scoundrel and hero Han Solo once said long ago in a galaxy far away to, “Never tell me the odds.” I can only imagine that was the same thing director Ron Howard kept telling himself when he was brought on board for Solo: A Star Wars Story after Lucasfilm fired directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who had almost finished shooting the entire movie when Howard replaced them. With less than a year until the movie’s release and nearly three quarters of the movie scraped and needing reshoots, the task to deliver another entertaining (and successful) Star Wars movie seemed daunting. However, with veteran and acclaimed director Ron Howard steering the ship (or Millennium Falcon, in this case), the latest standalone Star Wars project is another mostly entertaining entry in the intergalactic saga. While Solo is far from perfect, this origin story about the original space cowboy is full of fun moments for both new and older audiences looking to whet their appetite during summer blockbuster season.

The Glass Castle: An Extraordinary Cast Brings This Tragic Tale to Life (Review)

The Glass Castle: An Extraordinary Cast Brings This Tragic Tale to Life (Review)

The idea of a “glass castle” is something fantastical.  It is an elegant structure unlike any other.  While other buildings rely on concrete or timber as a foundation and structure, this is one that stands on it’s own with just glass.  The way to glass is meant to be designed is to allow light in without changing the temperature inside the structure.  It’s such a grand idea that it’s just barely out of the realm of reality. It’s a grand gesture that is impossible to truly fulfill, and it is as much a sham as it is see through.  The idea of a glass castle is a strong metaphor that lays the groundwork for the film The Glass Castle, based on the memoir of the same name by Jeanette Walls. War for the Planet of the Apes is The Most Emotionally Satisfying Film I’ve Seen in Ages (Review)

War for the Planet of the Apes is The Most Emotionally Satisfying Film I’ve Seen in Ages (Review)

War For the Planet of the Apes is the first Planet of the Apes movie I’ve seen since the remake with Mark Wahberg.  I was asked why I would start in a trilogy on the third film.  The answer is: because that’s what came out this week.  The other answer is because a film should stand on its own merits, even if it’s the third in a trilogy.  You should never have to have seen/read/listened to something else, in order to enjoy a movie.
