Let’s be honest – 2016 was the most underwhelming year at the movies in recent memory. While there was a fair of number great and entertaining movies, the wait between seeing memorable ones felt longer than usual. And while, as the trades have reported, it was another record-breaking year at the box office, inflation diminished the return of some of the biggest movies of 2016.
Thankfully, 2016 is out of the way and 2017 has arrived and studios are doubling down on tentpole movies. It’s exciting to consider what 2017 has to offer, as many movies scheduled for release throughout the year look very promising. As such, it was difficult to pick five movies I’m most looking forward to in 2017.
2016 has come to a close (well…. Shortly it will be anyway) so I’m here to rattle off what I loved the most about this past year — a year that was riddled with celebrity death, political turmoil and whatever else people felt like complaining about (real or not). So let’s cut to the good stuff, the best of film, comics, music and television. Shall we? Continue reading Keven’s Favorite Things from 2016 Including Animosity & Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
My goodness, director Gareth Edwards had some pretty big shoes to fill – Rogue One had to bridge the fairly sizable gap between Episode III and IV, it had to tell a great story about how the plans for the Death Star were acquired, it had to fit thematically and visually with all the other films and yet still feel fresh. Other films have tried that and failed – in this very franchise. Anyway, that’s a tall order. Luckily, in my mind, Rogue One succeeds on all counts. As evidenced by last year’s release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the galaxy, “far, far away,” reigns supreme over pop culture once again. But the next release in the Star Wars universe proves to be a rather different, and somewhat challenging, sell for audiences: a spin-off set between episodes three and four of the intergalactic saga. Without the Skywalker family or lightsabers (mostly) as the main focus, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a view of the inner workings of both sides of the all-out war between the Rebellion and the Empire. Rogue One could have easily been just a “cash grab” simply by inserting the words “Star Wars” to its title, but luckily, for the most part, it isn’t. Despite some issues, Rogue One is a fine expedition filled with new characters on both sides of the conflict that feel somewhat meaningful to the Star Wars universe.
From Disney and director Gareth Edwards, comes Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Taking place before the events in the original movie Episode IV, Rogue One stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed. The film is scheduled for release December 16, 2016. Continue reading New Rogue One Trailer Reveals Mads Mikkelsen’s Character, More Vader & Giant Fallen Jedi Statue?
