Downsizing Comes Up Short With Its Ambitions (Review)

Downsizing Comes Up Short With Its Ambitions (Review)

When trailers first started coming out for Alexander Payne’s latest film, I was definitely intrigued by its premise.  The idea of humans opting for a medical procedure that shrinks them down to four inches tall seemed like a possibility for great satire and comedy.  The cast looked impressive, and Payne’s previous films have been great.  Unfortunately, Downsizing is absolutely nothing like the trailer. All the funny bits were shown in marketing, if they even made the final cut of the movie.  The finished product is too tonally and thematically inconsistent to be good, and the story gets weighed down by its force fed and heavy handed message. Despicable Me 3: Hilarious & Fun to Watch.  There Was No Part of This I Didn’t Like (Review)

Despicable Me 3: Hilarious & Fun to Watch.  There Was No Part of This I Didn’t Like (Review)

I had such high hopes for Despicable Me 3.  From the trailer it looked like the plot was solid – Gru was tempted to get back to his criminal past.  That fits for me.  I loved the first Despicable Me but wasn’t too keen on the second one.  The charm of the franchise is Gru being this awkward criminal mastermind who has to deal things that a normal person would find easy but he finds impossible.  So the third, I felt, might be getting back to that. I enjoyed watching all 90 minutes of Despicable 3.  There really was no part of Despicable Me I didn’t like. Read more

Ghostbusters: Calm Down Everybody, They Did Not Turn Ghostbusters into Bridesmaids [Review]

I never got why people were so upset about this new Ghostbusters.  Sure the decision to make all four new Ghostbusters female seemed gimmicky; it was one of the first things I heard about this new remake and it was clearly a marketing point.  But there seem to be people actually upset about this.  I would have been among them if the gender of the cast detracted from the quality of the film.  It did not.  Calm down everybody, they did not turn Ghostbusters into Bridesmaids. Zoolander 2: Genuinely Funny but Doesn’t Quite Live Up to The First One [Review]

I knew I was going to love this movie before I sat down to watch it. The original Zoolander was so funny that based on the trailer for the new one, I could have written this review beforehand and just filled in the details after.  And I was right – Zoolander 2 is all kinds of awesome but did it really live up to the first one?  Could it have?
