Sean’s Top 10 Movies of 2016: La La Land, Don’t Think Twice & A Monster Calls

2016 featured more than a few good movies. But as far as big-budget spectacles go, very few really stood out, as the majority of the studio tent poles were largely disappointing. Luckily, however, smaller, more independent movies stepped up big time this year. For me, the majority of the best movies I saw in 2016 were more affecting than they were movies that left me in awe or that had a “wow” factor.

While there was one movie that stood out above the rest for my Number 1 spot, spots 2-10 required me to thoroughly scrutinize my list in order to place the rest of the movies I saw this year in the right spots. Hell or High Water: Summer’s Best Movie is Finally Here [Review]

The recurring theme in two of the previous four movie reviews I’ve reviewed here is that, yes, summer movies have been a major letdown on all fronts. Superhero movies? Duds. Animated movies? Cash-grabs. Mega-budget sci-fi sequels? Repugnant. Comedies? Crickets. It’s worth mentioning summer for a third time because audiences have not been given that ONE movie that stays with them beyond the weekend they see it in theaters. Luckily, that changes this weekend. Hell or High Water is a near-perfect modern Western, filled with excellent performances and cheeky dialogue that personify the embodiment of the withering away of the genuine American Dream.
