Rampage is Highly Entertaining & Deceptively Well Made (Review)

Rampage is Highly Entertaining & Deceptively Well Made (Review)

I don’t really want to admit it, but I wanted to see Rampage since the moment I first heard about it.  Younger Mark LOVED the old Rampage video game and apparently I still harbor some fondness for the franchise because I was excited to see the film.   Weird that it’s another Kaiju movie – is this just a new trend or am I suffering from the Baader-Meinhof effect because I saw Pacific Rim 2?  This one didn’t have giant robots though, so humanity was at a distinct disadvantage. I guess if Charlie Hunnam had been there, maybe it would have been a much shorter movie.  Read more

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a Fun Sequel to the Beloved Classic (Review)

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a Fun Sequel to the Beloved Classic (Review)

We have reached the pinnacle age of Hollywood, and by that I mean we have literally run out of ideas. Or so it seems anyways.  Everything is about churning out the biggest blockbuster for box office profits, or quickly rushing a sequel within the next year or two.  In the coming ages, the 2010s shall be known as the blockbuster reboot era.  That was many peoples fears when the Jumanji reboot was announced a couple years ago.  While not a full 100% reboot, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a standalone sequel to the beloved 90s children film.  It’s a fun watch and a good time if you don’t look too closely. Marvel Studios is Doing Human CGI Better Than Anyone Else & Here’s Why: Lola VFX

Marvel Studios is Doing Human CGI Better Than Anyone Else & Here’s Why: Lola VFX

As wonderful as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is, I still can’t wrap my head around the CGI characters of Grand Moff Tarkin and a young princess Leia… They just don’t look real to me and I think it’s because the eyes are too damn shiny, which gives the face this glossy mannequin look. Marvel on the other hand just delivered a de-aged Kurt Russell in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and I could not tell that he was CGI. Not one damn bit. Why is Marvel making better CGI faces than anyone else? Turns out it isn’t the technology, but rather it comes down to plain ol’ hard work and artistry from Lola VFX. Read more

Fate of the Furious: Latest Entry Shifts the Franchise into Neutral [Review]

Fate of the Furious: Latest Entry Shifts the Franchise into Neutral [Review]

It’s hard not to watch The Fate of the Furious and think about the void left by Paul Walker, who played one of the two main characters in the Fast & Furious franchise until his tragic death in 2013. Walker’s character, Brian O’Conner, was given a proper sendoff in Furious 7, which paid great tribute to the beloved actor and his place in the NOS-infused series. After seeing Furious 7, I figured this was not only a near-perfect way to end the story of Walker’s character, but also to end the franchise with the remaining characters in play. But being that the franchise continues to make money, another sequel was inevitable. Fast forward three years from Furious 7 and we now have The Fate of the Furious. While the latest entry offers a number of impressive, physics-defying action sequences and some good laughs, as a whole, none of it pushes the franchise either forward or in reverse, making The Fate of the Furious just “okay.”

Moana: Funny & Charming. Impossible Not to Love [Review]

Moana: Funny & Charming. Impossible Not to Love [Review]

It’s impossible not to love Moana; it’s so charming.   I was stuck elbow to elbow with a theater positively stuffed with little kids at that special age where they cough and sneeze without covering their mouths and I still had a good time.    I love the effort Walt Disney Animation put into its originality.  It’s not just retelling Fairy Tales anymore, it’s showing a different kind of life with different stories and different practices.  I loved the way Moana looked, especially the way the people moved when they danced.  It was gorgeous. Moana: Another Animated Disney Classic, Which is Just What We Need Right Now [Review]

Leave it to Disney to help alleviate some of the turmoil felt throughout America since the Election Day results with an animated sea-journeying epic. If you’re looking for a two-hour escape with the family to try and get away from all the outside noise from the past couple of strenuous weeks, look no further. Family movies don’t get any better than Moana, which is easily the best family movie of the year. Read more
