First Man Sticks The Landing with Exhilarating & Personal Results (Review)

In the opening sequence of First Man, we see Neil Armstrong test piloting in the Mojave Desert. As evident in this intense sequence that thrusts viewers right into the middle of the cockpit, viewers are in for a thrilling, yet bumpy ride about one of the greatest accomplishments in human history. Director Damien Chazelle immaculately balances First Man by keeping it as grounded on planet Earth as it is exhilarating in the movie’s climatic sequence on the moon. By showing the toll this dangerous mission took on Neil Armstrong and everyone else involved in this project over the years, it makes this biopic about the small step for man even more satisfying (and affecting) by the film’s conclusion.

It is going to be odd seeing director Damien Chazelle release a film that doesn’t deal heavily with music, but after the trailer for First Man dropped last night, it looks like we’re in for a thrilling adventure. With an extremely talented cast consisting of Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, and Jason Clarke, on paper First Man should be a major Oscar contender. Read more

La La Land: Mellifluously Amazing [Review]

“Here’s to the fools who dream.”

We’re all reliant on our dreams, whether they are big or small. We set ourselves up for achieving what we want most. And along the way, we encounter risk, reward, sacrifice, emotion, and what it means to live. Director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) exemplifies all of these in La La Land, a musical about two people who cross paths and fall in love while they both aspire to be somebody in the City of Angels. They certainly don’t make movies like La La Land anymore, which is understandable considering how hard they are to pull off in this day and age. But La La Land feels like something brought back from the old Hollywood for a new generation to appreciate. Set to the beat of a startlingly vibrant musical tone, La La Land is a masterwork in showing us what it means to follow our dreams.
