Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is Ambitious but Takes a Long Time to Get Going (Review)

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is Ambitious but Takes a Long Time to Get Going (Review)

This week I watched Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.  I certainly liked the first one. Dinosaurs are awesome and Chris Pratt is handsome, it’s a winning combination.  Obviously I’m not the only who thinks so, the theater was packed. There must be quite the market for Dinosaurs and/or sexy, adorable men and so I had high hopes.  Could they make a sequel to Jurassic World that was as good as the first? Read more

Life Finds a Way in Spectacular ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ (Review)

Life Finds a Way in Spectacular ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ (Review)

Three years after the smashing success of Jurassic World (the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom takes audiences back to Isla Nublar for another popcorn blockbuster adventure featuring everyone’s favorite group of reptile offerings. But unlike Jurassic World where we saw mostly one dinosaur creating most of the mayhem on the island, Fallen Kingdom takes audiences back to the island where new dangers arise not only from the dinosaurs, but also from other parties. As the story plays out, it becomes obvious that Fallen Kingdom serves as a reinvention of the franchise. But luckily, the end results are roaring, which make it superior to its predecessor and take the franchise in a bold, new direction. Credit for that goes to director J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage), who delivers another fun-filled dinosaur adventure full of dazzling action and nightmarish scares that make Fallen Kingdom the best Jurassic Park movie since the original.

Avengers: Infinity War is Apocalyptic & Satisfying Even Though I’m Sick to Death of Superhero Movies (Review)

Avengers: Infinity War is Apocalyptic & Satisfying Even Though I’m Sick to Death of Superhero Movies (Review)

I don’t know why, but I’ve been looking forward to this Avengers: Infinity War.   From the trailers and all the stuff in the after-credits scenes, it felt like all Marvel movies were leading up to this.  Now, having seen the film, I can say this is absolutely true. The Infinity War really is the climax of all of them, where everything is brought together for a truly impressive showdown.  It’s even more apocalyptic (and longer) than Captain America: Civil War, and that is saying something. Fair warning, though, I am sick unto death with Superhero movies but I will try to make this review better than some of my previous ones of movies in this genre. Read more

Decade Build-Up Pays Off in Marvelous Fashion with Avengers: Infinity War (Review)

Decade Build-Up Pays Off in Marvelous Fashion with Avengers: Infinity War (Review)

Ten years and 18 movies later have led to Avengers: Infinity War, the movie that changes everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). And with Thanos, the evil-lurking presence teased over the years in various MCU films, finally coming out from the shadows, the significant ramifications viewers will witness at the hands of the intergalactic despot in Infinity War are sure to cause a stir of emotion with fans who have followed these superheroes over the last decade. When you bring together the original Avengers mixed with new Avengers (Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man) and the Guardians of the Galaxy to take down the biggest threat the universe has ever seen, on paper, it might feel a little overwhelming to pack this many superheroes into one two and a half hour movie. However, with the Russo Brothers, the directing duo behind the two best movies in the MCU (Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War), overseeing the biggest ever ensemble of superheroes assembled on screen, rest assured they manage to give balance to all these characters we have come to know for the entire duration of Infinity War. The result is equally thrilling, captivating, emotional, and, not so shockingly, epic all at once.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2: Action Packed & Also The Funniest Movie of The Year! (Review)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2: Action Packed & Also The Funniest Movie of The Year! (Review)

I’ve been looking forward to the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel for a while now.  I loved the first one and the second one looked awesome.  And I’m here to tell you:  it was.  And that was even after the whole ordeal that comes with seeing something everyone else wants to see right away – we had long waits, the line cutters, the seat savers (actually that one was almost me), the guy with the crying baby who wouldn’t leave.  Even with all those, I still had a wonderful time.   Read more

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Lovable Characters Help Propel Robust Sequel (Review)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Lovable Characters Help Propel Robust Sequel (Review)

Three years after coming out of left field and becoming everyone’s favorite group of superheroes overnight, the A-holes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are back in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The first entries in these superhero outings from Marvel Studios are usually “fairly good.” But that was not the case with 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which is arguably one of the very best movies to date in the MCU. So, going into Vol. 2, the expectations are fairly high. Vol. 2 hits all the right notes as a sequel; it’s bigger in every aspect – from scope to characters and action. Bigger can be better in many cases, but Vol. 2’s plot keeps those bigger things rather slender and rangy at times. But still, director James Gunn’s usage of these characters we’ve all come to know and love help propel this robust, entertaining sequel.

Passengers: Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Pratt Can’t Save this Boring Space Odyssey [Review]

If you’re going to drop a sci-fi movie in late December and it’s directed by the guy who made The Imitation Game and stars Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) and Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), you would expect a lot, right? I mean, I certainly would. On paper, Passengers has all the makings of a star-powered vehicle that would cash in around the holidays and even generate some awards buzz. Unfortunately, for Passengers, they didn’t show this movie on paper, because none of the playbook meshes together on screen, and the result is tedious and melodramatic. Read more

The Magnificent Seven: A Grand Remake Worthy of its Movie Title [Review]

The Magnificent Seven: A Grand Remake Worthy of its Movie Title [Review]

Given the combination of the cast and premise, The Magnificent Seven screams “summer blockbuster.” Thankfully, MGM and Columbia Pictures were wise to place the 2016 Western remake right in the middle of September instead of sticking it somewhere in the crowded (and disappointing) summer season. With a budget over $100M for a movie fitting into a genre many consider “dead,” The Magnificent Seven has a lot riding on its shoulders. Luckily though, director Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer) delivers an action-packed, astonishing remake that stands on its own apart from the 1960 classic while also proving that Westerns are the only genre worth rebooting in an age where remakes are the new Hollywood strategy.
