Sicario: Day of the Soldado Felt like a Bad Heist Movie Where Nobody Was Allowed to Crack a Smile (Review)

Sicario: Day of the Soldado Felt like a Bad Heist Movie Where Nobody Was Allowed to Crack a Smile (Review)

This week I saw Sicario: Day of the Soldado.  Boy, am I ever the wrong person to review this.  I just don’t get it at all. I don’t even know how to talk about it.  I got the feeling that this film was really good but I just couldn’t see how.  Whatever the message was, whatever the appeal, it passed me by. This has happened to me before and I’ve come back to a film in 20 years and seen its genius.  Maybe that will be what I do with Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Or it could be a swing and a miss, I couldn’t tell you. If you were a fan of the first movie, maybe skip this review, I’m not going to have much add. Read more

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the Year’s Best Blockbuster (Review)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the Year’s Best Blockbuster (Review)

After seeing Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I’m not surprised Lucasfilm is giving director Rian Johnson the keys to a new Star Wars trilogy after Episode XI; in fact, Rian Johnson’s now further involvement has me actually excited for the next Star Wars trilogy (and I’m not even a Star Wars fan). While The Last Jedi is a Star Wars movie, it also at times feels unlike any other Star Wars movie you’ve seen before. With that said, however, The Last Jedi is still a Star Wars movie through and through, and is filled with crowd-pleasing moments that should delight fans of the franchise. From the story and its gratifying twists and turns, to character developments for both new and old characters in the saga, to the movie’s dazzling action and visual effects, The Last Jedi is everything you could hope for in a grade-A blockbuster, and is easily one of the absolute best Star Wars movies in the franchise.

Sicario: A Believable & Visceral Plunge into The Mexican Drug War [Review]

Sicario: A Believable & Visceral Plunge into The Mexican Drug War [Review]

I have to admit, this isn’t my favorite genre.  I’m not so good with gritty realistic action movies.  Give me an animated fantasy with some adult humor, saturated colours and musical numbers any day. So I might be a little hard on Sicario and if I am, it certainly doesn’t deserve it.  It wasn’t sexy, it wasn’t funny, it wasn’t gorgeous but it was very very good.
