Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – Make No Mistake This is a War Movie [Review]

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – Make No Mistake This is a War Movie [Review]

My goodness, director Gareth Edwards had some pretty big shoes to fill – Rogue One had to bridge the fairly sizable gap between Episode III and IV, it had to tell a great story about how the plans for the Death Star were acquired, it had to fit thematically and visually with all the other films and yet still feel fresh.  Other films have tried that and failed – in this very franchise.  Anyway, that’s a tall order.  Luckily, in my mind, Rogue One succeeds on all counts. Rogue One: First Star Wars Spin-Off is Exciting and Somewhat Meaningful [Review]

Rogue One: First Star Wars Spin-Off is Exciting and Somewhat Meaningful [Review]

As evidenced by last year’s release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the galaxy, “far, far away,”  reigns supreme over pop culture once again. But the next release in the Star Wars universe proves to be a rather different, and somewhat challenging, sell for audiences: a spin-off set between episodes three and four of the intergalactic saga. Without the Skywalker family or lightsabers (mostly) as the main focus, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a view of the inner workings of both sides of the all-out war between the Rebellion and the Empire. Rogue One could have easily been just a “cash grab” simply by inserting the words “Star Wars” to its title, but luckily, for the most part, it isn’t. Despite some issues, Rogue One is a fine expedition filled with new characters on both sides of the conflict that feel somewhat meaningful to the Star Wars universe.

Moana: Funny & Charming. Impossible Not to Love [Review]

Moana: Funny & Charming. Impossible Not to Love [Review]

It’s impossible not to love Moana; it’s so charming.   I was stuck elbow to elbow with a theater positively stuffed with little kids at that special age where they cough and sneeze without covering their mouths and I still had a good time.    I love the effort Walt Disney Animation put into its originality.  It’s not just retelling Fairy Tales anymore, it’s showing a different kind of life with different stories and different practices.  I loved the way Moana looked, especially the way the people moved when they danced.  It was gorgeous. Zootopia: Genius, Rich & Inviting with Amazing Character Design [Review]

Normally I don’t go in for G-rated films.  I like a little sex and bloodshed in my entertainment, not to mention cussing.  At least there was nudity, which was hilarious.  If you think that’s a spoiler, it’s not.  There were naked animals in the trailer.  But my goodness, how I enjoyed this film.  The world of Zootopia was rich and inviting and the story was well told. The Top 10 Horror Films Since 2010 to Watch This Halloween

The Top 10 Horror Films Since 2010 to Watch This Halloween

After browsing through the typical greatest horror films of all time lists and seeing the same titles over and over again I grew bored. I’m sick of seeing The Exorcist declared the greatest horror movie ever made. As for The Shining? I think that movie sucks. There – I said it – it’s atrociously acted and ridiculous. I tried watching it again the other week and I couldn’t sit through it. So let’s take a look at some CURRENT horror titles for a much needed change in pace.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – A Mediocre Sequel with Slick Visuals But Not Much to Say [Review]

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – A Mediocre Sequel with Slick Visuals But Not Much to Say [Review]

There must be something freeing about writing a post apocalypse movie.   Things are simpler.  Freer.  You wouldn’t have to worry about traffic cams, or being broke, or having a job.  Relationships, too, are largely uncomplicated – there’s good guys and bad guys and it’s pretty easy most of the time to tell them apart.   The world of Maze Runner:  Scorch Trials has had not one but two apocalypses (apocalypse?) – the sun has burned most of the land to desert and there’s been a deadly virus to boot.
