From Image Comics creative team writer Justin Jordan and artists Kyle Strahm and Felipe Sobreiro comes the post-apocalyptic horror series Spread. Check out my review of issue 11!
Ten years ago, we dug too deep and unleashed something we couldn’t control. Something that twisted and warped every living thing in its path. Something that remade the world in its own image. The Spread. One man has found a child who could save the world, but he has to fight monsters, raiders, cannibals, religious fanatics, and one cranky baby to do it.
The ‘spread’ has been growing and building up an aerial assault this entire arc so far. You may have seen this when those nasty flyers were gobbling up deer or even freaking bears. Artist Kyle Strahm has been putting the pedal to the metal in terms of gore and those poor animals never stood a fucking chance. The fourth chapter of the ‘Children’s Crusade’ is an action-packed killfest where monsters, children, unlikely heroes and villains collide.
Justin Jordan has done something once again completely unexpected in issue 11 however and he’s went and left me with a sense of hope in a seemingly hopeless world. As violent and crazy as this chapter was and it most certainly freaking was, it concludes in an almost happy manner. I was stunned. I won’t tell you who lives or who dies, but Spread has been one bleak as hell comic and Jordan has rectified that with giving us readers a glimmer of hope.
Every character from No, Jack to Molly and even the baby have their extreme moments of danger as the flyers unleash their attack in the forest. I was holding my breath during every page flip expecting the worst. There are casualties in this chapter and some surprises which show the ‘spread’ as evolving. That in itself is a horrifying revelation.
The next step in this tale looks to be an area called The Sanctuary. I’m excited to see what’s in store next for the world of Spread as Jordan and Strahm have been firing on all cylinders to make this series one of the finest Image comic titles in years. It’s gritty, fascinating and surprising. Everything a fan of post-apocalyptic horror would want.
