Memphis Tennessee rockers One Less Reason are gearing up to release their new and sixth studio album ‘The Memories Uninvited’ on August 19, 2016 through Tattooed Millionaire Records. This is my advanced review of the upcoming effort.
Lead singer Cris Brown describes One Less Reason with the following statement: “One Less Reason songs are more lyrically heavy than musically heavy, and there’s always a message. It’s all based around those four letter words – love, hate, pain, hope. I want people to feel the record more so than just hear it.”
There are some rock bands out there that manage to appeal to metal guys like myself and they do that through their songwriting and the amount of heart and soul that is injected into the tracks.. Shinedown and Blue October are two of my favorites because they can transition from the heavy musically to the heavy emotionally and they do it very naturally. One Less Reason manages to pull this off on their sixth effort ‘The Memories Uninvited’ which is cocked and loaded with an emotionally charged rock punch to the gut.
Lead singer Cris Brown has great range and you get a nice dose of heavy vocals in the opening track ‘Break Me’, which is one of the album highlights for me personally. It’s a great way to get fired up and one of the better album openers all year from anyone. Then you get songs like’Where Were You’, which is doesn’t feature the screams in Brown’s vocals, but the track is heavy lyrically. I like that – I can appreciate that, even though I’m a sucker for the heavy shit – I dig it when singers can get serious and still sing the hits.
‘Sometimes’ is the best song on the record and I think it’s one that I’ll remember the most. That one’s a surefire hit – it’s radio-friendly, it’s strong and it packs one of the best choruses on the record. I foresee lots of lighters in the air for that beast. Hell, you could throw lighters up on most of the songs featured on ‘The Memories Uninvited’. It’s one of the most honest and heartfelt rock records that I’ve listened to this year and a refreshing dose of real music in a year where most shit is polished and unrecognisable on a human level atop the charts.
