Moonlight: The Dark Horse that Could Upset La La Land at this Sunday’s Oscars

The Oscars are this Sunday and it’s no secret that La La Land is the clear front-runner right now to take home the big prize (Best Picture). Dominating entertainment and social media buzz since its release, La La Land has a chance to win as many as 14 Oscars, which would break the record for a single movie. (Titanic, Ben-Hur, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King each won 11 Oscars). Besides La La Land, eight other movies are nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars. And while I consider them all dark horses at this point, Moonlight stands the best chance at pulling an upset. La La Land was the best movie I saw in 2016; but in my opinion Moonlight was the most important movie released in 2016.  After viewing it for a second time over the holiday weekend I can see why Oscar voters could lean towards this heartbreaking, three-part story. Both YouTube and Disney announced that they are severing ties with the channel’s biggest star, Pewdiepie after he released (then deleted) a prank video in which he paid two men to hold up signs reading “Death to All Jews”. This however was just the most recent anti-semetic joke that Pewdiepie (real name: Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg) had been accused of making through his YouTube channel which has a record-breaking 50-million plus subscribers. Sean’s Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2017: Samurai Jack, Fargo & Game of Thrones

Make no mistake: we are currently living in the Golden Age of television. Be it on a streaming service, broadcast network, or premium channel, there’s something for everyone and more. At the time of this article’s publication, my DVR was almost half full and that’s not even counting everything on my Netflix queue.

While some of last year’s best new shows won’t be returning until 2018 (Atlanta and Westworld), that’s okay given the amount of content this year promises to offer. Already, we have some new, standout shows like The CW’s Riverdale and FX’s Legion that are currently airing on television right now. But given how the rest of the year will play out, those two shows feel like appetizers compared to what’s coming next. From dragons, to the upside down, to the return of a warrior fulfilling his quest, 2017 offers plenty of exciting stuff that is sure to keep our eyes glued to our televisions.
