The Emoji Movie is Imaginative & Colorful. Can’t Say a Bad Thing about it… (Review)

The Emoji Movie is Imaginative & Colorful. Can’t Say a Bad Thing about it… (Review)

This week I went to see my Emoji movie with my mum and she really liked it.  I love my mum and have a good time whenever I’m with her so for this review I’m only going to say nice things about this movie. Anyone who wants a searing review where I vent spleen about the state of film today will have to wait, and probably not too long.  At the time of this writing Rotten Tomatoes has this at 8%, which is pretty low, which is unfortunate and really undeserved.  I will even add an extra star to my rating because I had a good time. Rufus Dawkins’ HeartWhole Will Leave You Wanting More (Review)

Rufus Dawkins’ HeartWhole Will Leave You Wanting More (Review)

I’m a huge supporter of the local music scene. There are so many great artists in and around Nashville. Rufus Dawkins is one of them. Straight out of Clarksville, TN, HeartWhole is Rufus’s first album, as well as one of the first to be recorded by local Contra Coda Media. Often, when I hear a musician use the term “passion project” it’s followed up by something pretentious, more for the artist than for the listener… That is not the case for HeartWhole Read more

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is Both Beautiful & Nonsensical (Review)

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is Both Beautiful & Nonsensical (Review)

I knew I’d like Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets as soon as I saw the trailers.  Fair warning, I liked Valerian for exactly the same reason I liked Gods of Egypt.  Visuals were simply stunning.  Whether it’s underwater scenes (in a space station!) or inter-dimensional market place or just the weird poof as ships emerged from their FTL space, everything was lavishly, generously, obscenely wonderful to look at.  I haven’t seen attention to aesthetics like this since Avatar, and I think this might be better. Ozark: Interesting & Intense But Doesn’t Achieve Greatness (Review)

Ozark: Interesting & Intense But Doesn’t Achieve Greatness (Review)

Netflix has established the reputation of releasing very impressive TV shows and movies. When I first saw that Ozark was a “Breaking Bad” type show, I was immediately all in. Breaking Bad is the greatest TV show of all time. I recently finished Ozark and I’m here to say that it is nowhere near the level of Breaking Bad, but it is still a cool show with some really intense moments and solid performances from Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. I’m interested to see where they go with it from here. Read more

Separations Shows Growth in New Aggressive Album ‘Bloom’ (Review)

Separations Shows Growth in New Aggressive Album ‘Bloom’ (Review)

If I had to pick one word to describe Bloom, the second album from Atlanta based band Separations, that word would be aggressive. I admit, I had not heard of this band until very recently, and came upon Bloom with no preconceptions. From the simple album art, consisting of the title in colorful letters over a white background, I expected something in the vein of shoegaze. I was very wrong. The first track, “Hollow”, was like having my door kicked in as it builds for only a few moments into an explosion of drums, and a bass heavy riff. The album is nothing short of explosive. While the melodic breakdowns begin to balance it out, a little more breathing room in the music would be a huge benefit to the overall album, like a cool down lap after a long sprint. Read more

A Ghost Story is Life, Death & Time Conveyed Like You’ve Never Seen (Review)

A Ghost Story is Life, Death & Time Conveyed Like You’ve Never Seen (Review)

When’s the last time you watched a drama and it was more terrifying than a horror movie? A Ghost Story manages to provoke almost every emotion you can think of. But don’t be misled. It is NOT a horror movie. It is just haunting because of how Director David Lowery conveys certain death, loneliness, and time. It is more of poem than a film. The simplistic nature of A Ghost Story is executed beautifully to make it one of the most thought-provoking films of 2017. You’ve never seen anything like it. Read more
